What the same program costs

Example only, calculated from published list prices checked Oct 7, 2026. Assumptions: monthly billing unless noted. Program: four campaigns a month plus welcome and nurture automations with branching. That means Mailchimp Standard and ActiveCampaign Plus. Excludes add-ons, SMS and taxes.

Like-for-like monthly cost: Mailchimp Standard vs ActiveCampaign Plus
ContactsMailchimp StandardActiveCampaign Plus (monthly)ActiveCampaign Plus (billed annually, per month)
1,000$45 (1,500 tier)$59$49
5,000$100$179$145
10,000$135 ($114.75 in year one with Mailchimp's 15% offer)$239$189
25,000$310$489$389

How to read this:

  • Mailchimp Standard costs less at every size in this example. You give up site tracking, unlimited automation actions without flow caps, and ActiveCampaign’s CRM add-on.
  • Simpler programs change the picture. If you only need short flows, Mailchimp Essentials ($26.50 / $75 / $110 / $270) and ActiveCampaign Starter ($19 / $99 / $189 / $489 monthly) are the comparison.
  • Adding a sales pipeline to ActiveCampaign costs $49/mo more on Plus.

Automation

  • Mailchimp: automation is called Marketing Automation Flows. Essentials is limited to flows of up to 4 steps. Standard opens up to 200 flows with multiple starting points and branching. That covers welcome, abandoned-cart (with a connected store), post-purchase and re-engagement programs.
  • ActiveCampaign: automations can trigger on email activity, site visits (with site tracking), purchases, tags, dates, custom events and deal stages (with Pipelines). They can branch, wait, update fields and call webhooks. Starter caps each automation at 5 actions; Plus removes the cap. Pro adds split-testing of automation paths, the automation map and attribution. ActiveCampaign publishes 950+ prebuilt automation recipes.

If your workflows depend on what people do on your website, or hand leads to sales, ActiveCampaign is built for that. If they’re mostly time-based sequences after a sign-up or purchase, Mailchimp Standard covers them.

CRM and sales

Mailchimp is a marketing tool with contact management. ActiveCampaign sells CRM separately:

  • Pipelines: $49 / $85 / $119 a month on Plus / Pro / Enterprise.
  • Pipelines & Sales Engagement: $85 / $139 / $199. This adds win probability.

Neither is available on Starter. Teams that need a real sales pipeline should budget for the add-on, or compare ActiveCampaign vs HubSpot.

Billing traps on both

  • Mailchimp bills subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts. The same person in two audiences counts twice, and you’re billed on your peak count. Going over your tier adds charges for extra contact blocks.
  • ActiveCampaign bills all contacts, regardless of status, on accounts created on or after Nov 3, 2025. Older accounts are billed on active contacts only. At the contact limit, campaigns stop sending unless auto-upgrade is on. Its help center lists sends beyond the monthly limit at $0.005 each.

On both, import only people you’ll email. Keep unsubscribes as a suppression file rather than a large unsubscribed list.

Deliverability

Neither BestSends review publishes a cross-platform inbox-placement comparison, so this page doesn’t claim either platform “delivers better”. Both support domain authentication:

  • Mailchimp: DKIM via CNAME records, plus DMARC.
  • ActiveCampaign: SPF, DKIM and DMARC, set up automatically or manually.

Both meet the Gmail and Yahoo bulk-sender requirements when you authenticate your domain and honor one-click unsubscribes.

Dedicated IPs: ActiveCampaign offers one to accounts with 100,000+ engaged contacts, at $750 per IP. Mailchimp offers a dedicated IP for transactional email, at $29.95/mo.

Any hands-on placement data appears only on the relevant review’s evidence section.

Ease of use

Mailchimp is the easier tool to start with: a guided setup and a drag-and-drop editor built for first-time senders. ActiveCampaign has more settings and a steeper learning curve, offset by its recipes and free onboarding on paid plans. If no one on your team will own automation, ActiveCampaign’s depth will go unused.

Switching from Mailchimp to ActiveCampaign

  • Export from Mailchimp: all four contact files (subscribed, unsubscribed, cleaned, non-subscribed), campaign HTML and reports. Mailchimp has no automation export, so screenshot every flow first.
  • Import into ActiveCampaign: bring unsubscribes in using its “Import as Unsubscribed Contact” option. On new accounts they count toward your bill, so consider keeping them as a separate suppression file instead.
  • Migration help: ActiveCampaign migrates up to 10 items (lists, forms, automations) for free on qualifying plans.

Who should pick which

Pick Mailchimp if:

  • You’re starting out or sending mostly campaigns
  • You want the simplest editor
  • Your lists are small
  • You prefer the lowest price for branching flows (Standard)

Pick ActiveCampaign if:

  • Your email reacts to site behavior
  • You nurture leads to sales
  • You want to split-test automations
  • You’ll pay for CRM, SMS or WhatsApp add-ons from the same vendor

Consider neither if:

Final Verdict

There’s no single winner. ActiveCampaign is the pick for automation-led teams whose email reacts to site behavior and hands leads to sales. Mailchimp is the pick for simple campaigns and beginners, and Mailchimp Standard costs less for branching flows in our like-for-like example.
